REGATTA FAQ:
What is a head race?
The fall is usually head race season. Head races are longer distance races (>2000 meters). Instead of racing side by side against each other, boats compete based on time. Most head races are 5000 meters (3.1 miles). The team with the fastest overall time wins the race. LBRA usually participates in 2 or more head races each Fall season. The Spring racing season starts in January. All of the Spring races are head to head, Sprint-type competition racing.
What should I bring to a regatta?
It is very important to check the weather before the race to be prepared for a long day outside. Usually it is a good idea to bring sunscreen, hats, plenty to eat and drink, a comfortable chair, and a book. Binoculars and cameras are also recommended to capture those special moments. The rowers are provided with plenty of food and beverage through the lday along with a tent where they rest, study/or socialize with their teammates between races.
What happens at a regatta?
Rowing teams set up tents at the regatta venue, usually near the water. The tents are the center of support operations for rowers and coaches. The hospitality tent is set up for rowers and coaches in this same area. Parents and/or guardians set up chairs and watch regatta events. This is normally the best place from which to observe and keep track of regatta events. The tent is a good place to get to know other parents and learn about the sport of rowing.
The boat trailer, carries the team’s shells (or boats), parks at the regatta site, and is the focus of rowing operations for the rowers and coaches. The boat trailer and boat docks are similar to that of a sideline for a football game. At the completion of the regatta, parents, rowers, and coaches may gather at the boat trailer for medal awards.
Parents and/or guardians should not expect coaches or rowers to engage in casual conversation at the trailer or boat docks during regattas.
After the races, tents come down, boats de-rigged, trash picked up, and all personal belongings accounted for at all locations. The team along with parents accomplishes these tasks before anyone is released to leave the race site.
How can I get involved in the activities at the regatta?
Don't be bashful!! Introduce yourself and step right up. We are always looking for parents to get involved in the many activities that take place on and off the water. If you have a preference for a specific type of activity please let us know. Some volunteer areas include hospitality, equipment, stats, finance, membership, fundraising and more.
